A review of a renewed effort to recalculate astrophysical opacities using theR-Matrix method is presented. The computational methods and new extensions aredescribed. Resulting enhancements found in test calculations under stellarinterior conditions compared to the Opacity Project could potentially lead tothe resolution of the solar abundances problem, as well as discrepanciesbetween recent experimental measurements at the Sandia Z-pinch inertialconfinement fusion device and theoretical opacity models. Outstanding issuesalso discussed are: (i) accuracy, convergence, and completeness of atomiccalculations, (ii) improvements in the Equation-of-State ofhigh-temperature-density plasmas, and (iii) redistribution of resonantoscillator strength in the bound-free continuum, and (iv) plasma broadening ofauotionizing resonances.
