Software-driven cloud networking is a new paradigm in orchestrating physicalresources (CPU, network bandwidth, energy, storage) allocated to networkfunctions, services, and applications, which is commonly modeled as across-layer network. This model carries a physical network representing thephysical infrastructure, a logical network showing demands, andlogical-to-physical node/link mappings. In such networks, a single failure inthe physical network may trigger cascading failures in the logical network anddisable network services and connectivity. In this paper, we propose anevaluation metric, survivable probability, to evaluate the reliability of suchnetworks under random physical link failure(s). We propose the concept of baseprotecting spanning tree and prove the necessary and sufficient conditions forits existence and relation to survivability. We then develop mathematicalprogramming formulations for reliable cross-layer network routing design withthe maximal reliable probability. Computation results demonstrate the viabilityof our approach.
