This paper engages the hard problem of consciousness (Chalmers, 1995) byexamining the enigmatic relationship between the neural correlates ofconsciousness (NCCs) and their associated qualia. The central premise is thatthe NCCs have both quantifiable (physical) aspects and, distinctively fromother physical systems, also have in certain states unquantifiable aspects(namely, qualia). The reconciliation of these apparently disparate aspectswithin a physical framework has proven elusive, hence qualia's omission fromthe physicalist account of the world (Jackson, 1982). This paper proposes anovel model in which the duality - or "mixed quantifiability" - of the NCCs canbe mathematically represented via a specific category of equations - thosefeaturing singularities. Consequently, this implies that qualia correspond tosingularities in the mathematical representations of certain aspects of theNCCs, thereby offering a model for accounting for qualia within the physicalframework of natural sciences. The proposed model may have been foreshadowed bySrinivasa Ramanujan. In addition to its theoretical implications, it could havepractical implications, including for artificial intelligence (AI) andartificial consciousness (AC).
