Despite two decades of studies, the formation of metallic glasses, verypromising systems for industrial applications, still remains mostlyunexplained. This lack of knowledge hinders the search for new systems, stillperformed with combinatorial trial and error. In the past, it was speculatedthat some sort of "confusion" during crystallization could play a key roleduring their formation. In this article, we propose a heuristic descriptorquantifying such confusion. It is based on the "thermodynamic density ofcompeting crystalline states", parameterized from high-throughput ab-initiocalculations. The existence of highly enthalpy-degenerate butgeometrically-different phases frustrates the crystallization process andpromotes glass formation. Two test beds are considered. A good and a badglass-former, CuZr and NiZr, are experimentally characterized withhigh-throughput synthesis. The experimental results corroborate the capabilityof the heuristic descriptor in predicting glass forming ability through thecompositional space. Our analysis is expected to deepen the understanding ofthe underlying mechanisms and to accelerate the discovery of novel metallicglasses.
