It is well-known that subspace migration is stable and effectivenon-iterative imaging technique in inverse scattering problem. But, for aproper application, geometric features of unknown targets must be consideredbeforehand. Without this consideration, one cannot retrieve good results viasubspace migration. In this paper, we identify the mathematical structure ofsingle- and multi-frequency subspace migration without any geometricconsideration of unknown targets and explore its certain properties. This isbased on the fact that elements of so-called Multi-Static Response (MSR) matrixcan be represented as an asymptotic expansion formula. Furthermore, based onthe examined structure, we improve subspace migration and consider themulti-frequency subspace migration. Various results of numerical simulationwith noisy data support our investigation.
