Polymorphism in the peripheral sensory system (e.g., congenital individualdifferences in photopigment configuration) is important in diverse researchfields, ranging from evolutionary biology to engineering, because of itspotential relationship to the cognitive and behavioral variability amongindividuals. However, there is a gap between the current understanding ofsensory polymorphism and the behavioral variability that is an outcome ofpotentially complex cognitive processes in natural environments. Linkingperipheral sensor properties to behavior requires computational models ofnervous processes transforming sensory representations into actions, based onquantitative data from physiological and behavioral studies. Recently, studiesbased on machine vision approaches are shedding light on the quantitativerelationships between sensory polymorphisms and the resulting behavioralvariability. To reach a convergent understanding of the functional impacts ofsensory polymorphisms in realistic environments, a close coordination amongphysiological, behavioral, and computational approaches is required. Aiming atenhancing such integrative researches, this paper provides an overview for therecent progresses in those interdisciplinary approaches, and suggests effectivestrategies for such integrative paradigms.
