Successful adaptation helped the emergence of complexity. Alternatingplastic- and rigid-like states were recurrently considered to play a role inadaptive processes. However, this extensive knowledge remained fragmented. Inthis paper I describe plasticity-rigidity cycles as a general adaptationmechanism operating in molecular assemblies, assisted protein folding, cellulardifferentiation, learning, memory formation, creative thinking, as well as theorganization of social groups and ecosystems. Plasticity-rigidity cycles enablea novel understanding of aging, exploration/exploitation trade-off andevolvability, as well as help the design of efficient interventions in medicineand in crisis management of financial and biological ecosystems.
