Assuming a general constitutive relation for the turbulent stresses in termsof the local large-scale velocity gradient, we constructed a class ofsubgrid-scale models for large-eddy simulation that are consistent withimportant physical and mathematical properties. In particular, they preservesymmetries of the Navier-Stokes equations and exhibit the proper near-wallscaling. They furthermore show desirable dissipation behavior and are capableof describing nondissipative effects. We provided examples of suchphysically-consistent models and showed that existing subgrid-scale models donot all satisfy the desired properties.
