Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) has emerged as a powerful tool forthe investigation of plasmonic nanoparticles, but the interpretation of EELSresults in in terms of optical quantities, such as the photonic local densityof states, remains challenging. Recent work has demonstrated that underrestrictive assumptions, including the applicability of the quasistaticapproximation and a plasmonic response governed by a single mode, one canrephrase EELS as a tomography scheme for the reconstruction of plasmoniceigenmodes. In this paper we lift these restrictions by formulating EELS as aninverse problem, and show that the complete dyadic Green tensor can bereconstructed for plasmonic particles of arbitrary shape. The key stepsunderlying our approach are a generic singular value decomposition of thedyadic Green tensor and a compressed sensing optimization for the determinationof the expansion coefficients. We demonstrate the applicability of our schemefor prototypical nanorod, bowtie, and cube geometries.
