In this dissertation novel resonant propulsion of dielectric microspheres isstudied with the goal of sorting spheres with identical resonances, which arecritical for developing microspherical photonics. First, evanescent fieldcouplers were developed by fixing tapered microfibers in mechanically robustplatforms. The tapers were obtained by chemical etching techniques. Using theseplatforms, WGMs modal numbers, coupling regimes and quality factors weredetermined for various spheres and compared with theory. Second, thespectroscopic properties of photonic molecules formed by spheres with betterthan 0.05% uniformity of WGM resonances were studied. It was shown that variousspatial configurations of coupled-cavities present relatively stable modesplitting patterns in the fiber transmission spectra which can be used asspectral signatures to distinguish such photonic molecules. The third part isthe study of giant resonant propulsion forces exerted on microspheres. Thiseffect was observed in suspensions of polystyrene spheres with sufficientlylarge diameters. By integrating optical tweezers for individual spheremanipulation, the wavelength detuning between a tunable laser and WGMs in eachof the spheres was precisely controlled. Resonant enhancement of optical forceswas directly demonstrated in experiments. The spectral shape, position andmagnitude of the observed propulsion force peaks were explained by efficienttransfer of light momentum to microspheres under resonant conditions. The peakmagnitude of the resonant force is shown to approach total absorption limitimposed by the conservation of momentum. The transverse movement of the spheresduring the propulsion process was studied and the existence of a stable radialtrap was demonstrated. Giant resonant propulsion forces can be used forlarge-scale sorting of microspheres with ultrahigh uniform resonant properties.
