Rapidly developing nanophotonics needs microresonators for different spectralranges, formed by chip-compatible technologies. In addition, the tunable onesare in greatest demand. Here, we present epitaxial site--controlledIII--nitride cup--cavities which can operate from ultraviolet tonear--infrared, supporting quasi whispering gallery modes up to roomtemperature. In these cavities, the refractive index variation near anabsorption edge causes the remarkable effect of mode switching, which isaccompanied by the change of spatial intensity distribution, concentration oflight efficiently into a subwavelength volume, and emission of terahertzphotons. At a distance from the edge, the mode-related narrow emission lineshave stable energies and widths at different temperatures. Moreover, theirenergies are identical in the large 'ripened' monocrystal cavities. Our resultsshed light on the mode behavior in the semiconductor cavities and open the wayfor single--growth--run manufacturing the devices comprising an active regionand a cavity with tunable mode frequencies.
