Existence of robust edge modes at interfaces of topologically dissimilarsystems is one of the most fascinating manifestations of a novel nontrivialstate of matter, topological insulators. Such electronic states were originallypredicted and discovered in condensed matter physics, but they find theircounterparts in other fields of physics, including the physics of classicalwaves and electromagnetics. Here, we present the first experimental realizationof a topological insulator for electromagnetic waves based on engineeredbianisotropic metamaterials. By employing the near-field scanning technique, wedemonstrate experimentally the topologically robust propagation ofelectromagnetic waves around sharp corners without back reflection.
