We detail a technique to produce actuators able to bear large strain andrespond to an external magnetic field. The material used is PDMS reinforcedwith nickel coated carbon fibres. Thanks to the nickel functionalisation, thefibre orientation can be achieved by embedding the viscous solution into a lowexternal magnetic field ($<0.2$~T). It is shown that both mechanical andmagnetic properties can be controlled by tailoring the material anisotropythrough properly orientating the reinforcing fibres in the pre-curing phase.The large strain behaviour is investigated by tensile testing up to 60 % ofdeformation and shows a strong dependence on the fibre orientation. Themagnetic properties are investigated by placing beam-like specimens into auniform magnetic field. The results show a multistable behaviour with atransition from a bending-only deformed configuration for the 0$^\circ$ fibresspecimen, to a twisting only configuration, achieved for fibres at 90$^\circ$whereas all the intermediate angles show both bending and twisting. Thisbehaviour is accurately captured by the large rotations beam model introduced.Such an actuator can be used in all applications which require fast responsetimes and large strain.
