Ethnocentrism is a behavioral strategy seen on every scale of socialinteraction. Game-theory models demonstrate that evolution selectsethnocentrism because it boosts cooperation, which increases reproductivefitness. However, some believe that interethnic unions have the potential tofoster universal cooperation and overcome in-group biases in humans. Here, weuse agent-based computer simulations to test this hypothesis. Cooperativeintergroup mating does lend an advantage to a universal cooperation strategywhen the cost/benefit ratio of cooperation is low and local populationdiversity is high.

Cooperative Intergroup Mating Can Overcome Ethnocentrism in Diverse Populations
