Dielectric microspheres with diameters on the order of several wavelengths oflight have attracted increasing attention from the photonics community due totheir ability to produce extraordinarily tightly focused beams termed photonicnanojets, to be used as microlenses for achieving optical super-resolution orto develop sensors based on whispering-gallery mode resonances. In thisdissertation, we study the optical properties of more complicated structuresformed by multiple spheres which can be assembled as linear chains, clusters orarrays, integrated with waveguides or embedded inside other materials toachieve new optical properties or device functionalities.
