Dynamic interspecific interactions are thought to contribute to fundamentalstructures of ecological communities. Using the Yodzis framework of dominancecontrol versus founder control versus niche control, the importance ofintransitive loops in sub-communities in a source/sink or metacommunitycompetition context is examined. It is found that a three-species sub-communitysampled from a species pool composed of nothing but dominance controlledspecies pairs can result in a stable three species coexistence. It is shownthat if effect and response competition are balanced, the overall sub-communitywill be persistent, anchored by one or more intransitive loops. It is proposedthat such an arrangement be referred to as an intransitive structure. It isconcluded that persistence of a sub-community (when species pairs in thespecies pool are all dominance controlled) of more than three species ispossible only if it has an intransitive structure.
