Recent evidence suggests that quantum effects may have functional importancein biological light-harvesting systems. Along with delocalized electronicexcitations, it is now suspected that quantum coherent interactions withcertain near-resonant vibrations may contribute to light-harvestingperformance. However, the actual quantum advantage offered by such coherentvibrational interactions has not yet been established. We investigate a quantumdesign principle, whereby coherent exchange of single energy quanta betweenelectronic and vibrational degrees of freedom can enhance a light-harvestingsystem's power above what is possible by thermal mechanisms alone. We present aprototype quantum heat engine which cleanly illustrates this quantum designprinciple, and quantify its quantum advantage using thermodynamic measures ofperformance. We also demonstrate the principle's relevance in parameter regimesconnected to natural light-harvesting structures.
