Broadcasting systems have to deal with channel variability in order to offerthe best spectral efficiency to the receivers. However, the transmissionparameters that maximise the spectral efficiency generally leads to a largelink unavailability. In this paper, we study analytically the trade-off betweenspectral efficiency and coverage for various channel resource allocationstrategies when broadcasting two services. More precisely, we consider thefollowing strategies: time sharing, hierarchical modulation and bit divisionmultiplexing. Our main contribution is the combination of bit divisionmultiplexing with non-uniform QAM to improve the performance of broadcastingsystems. The results show that this scheme outperforms all the previous channelresource allocation strategies.
