Macroscopic quantum systems (MQS) are macroscopic systems driven by quantumrather than classical mechanics, a long studied area with minimal success tillrecently. Harnessing the benefits of quantum mechanics on a macroscopic levelwould revolutionize fields ranging from telecommunication to biology, thelatter focused on here for reasons discussed. Contrary to misconceptions, thereare no known physical laws that prevent the development of MQS. Instead, theyare generally believed universally lost in complex systems from environmentalentanglements (decoherence). But we argue success is achievable MQS withdecoherence compensation developed, naturally or artificially, from top-downrather current reductionist approaches. This paper advances the MQS field by acomplex systems approach to decoherence. First, why complex system decoherenceapproaches (top-down) are needed is discussed. Specifically, complex adaptivesystems (CAS) are not amenable to reductionist models (and their masterequations) because of emergent behavior, approximation failures, not accountingfor quantum compensator mechanisms, ignoring path integrals, and the subentityproblem. In addition, since MQS must exist within the context of the classicalworld, rapid decoherence and prolonged coherence are both needed. Nature hasalready demonstrated this for quantum subsystems such as photosynthesis andmagnetoreception. Second, we perform a preliminary study that illustrates atop-down approach to potential MQS. In summary, reductionist arguments againstMQS are not justifiable. It is more likely they are not easily detectable inlarge intact classical systems or has been destroyed by reductionistexperimental set-ups. This complex systems decoherence approach, using top downinvestigations, is critical to paradigm shifts in MQS research both inbiological and non-biological systems.
