A general problem in complex cobordism theory is to find usefulrepresentatives for cobordism classes. One particularly convenient class ofcomplex manifolds consists of smooth projective toric varieties. The bijectivecorrespondence between these varieties and smooth polytopes allows us toexamine which complex cobordism classes contain a smooth projective toricvariety by studying the combinatorics of polytopes. These combinatorialproperties determine obstructions to a complex cobordism class containing asmooth projective toric variety. However, the obstructions are only necessaryconditions, and the actual distribution of smooth projective toric varieties incomplex cobordism appears to be quite complicated. The techniques used hereprovide descriptions of smooth projective toric varieties in low-dimensionalcobordism.
