Mobile devices are rapidly becoming the primary computing device in people'slives. Application delivery platforms like Google Play, Apple App Store havetransformed mobile phones into intelligent computing devices by the means ofapplications that can be downloaded and installed instantly. Many of theseapplications take advantage of the plethora of sensors installed on the mobiledevice to deliver enhanced user experience. The sensors on the smartphoneprovide the opportunity to develop innovative mobile opportunistic sensingapplications in many sectors including healthcare, environmental monitoring andtransportation. In this paper, we present a collaborative mobile sensingframework namely Mobile Sensor Data EngiNe (MOSDEN) that can operate onsmartphones capturing and sharing sensed data between multiple distributedapplications and users. MOSDEN follows a component-based design philosophypromoting reuse for easy and quick opportunistic sensing applicationdeployments. MOSDEN separates the application-specific processing from thesensing, storing and sharing. MOSDEN is scalable and requires minimaldevelopment effort from the application developer. We have implemented ourframework on Android-based mobile platforms and evaluate its performance tovalidate the feasibility and efficiency of MOSDEN to operate collaboratively inmobile opportunistic sensing applications. Experimental outcomes and lessonslearnt conclude the paper.
