We compare fundamental characteristics of proposed electrically pumpedsubwavelength plasmonic lasers (spasers) with ubiquitous all-dielectricsemiconductor micro-lasers (VCSEL) and indicate their close similarities aswell as large differences in performance (threshold, efficiency, coherence andspeed). These results should assist researchers in making informed choice ofthe emitter for each particular opto-electronic application.
