Laser-induced magnetization precession of a thick Pt/Co/Pt film withperpendicular interface anisotropy was studied using time resolvedmagneto-optical Kerr effect. Although the demagnetization energy dominates theinterface anisotropy for the Co thickness considered, and the Co layer can becharacterized by an effective easy-plane anisotropy, we found that anadditional $\pi$ shift in the initial phase for the magnetization precession isneeded to describe the measured data using only the effective easy-planeanisotropy. The additional $\pi$ phase is rendered by the dependence on thephonon temperature of the interface anisotropy, in contrast to the dependenceon the electron temperature of the demagnetization energy. Our observation thatthe precession phase is affected by both the electron and phonon temperaturewarrants a detailed knowledge about the forms of anisotropy present in thesystem under investigation for a complete description of laser-inducedmagnetization precession.
