The mini-review gives special attention to holistic approach and mechanismsof processes. The physical and chemical frames and background for visualperception and signalling are discussed. Perception of photons by retinal rodcells is described in more detail starting from photon absorption andculminating in ion currents. Dark noise and temperature-dependence ofphotoreceptor cells are analysed. Perception of polarised light, its effectsand informational importance are discussed based on underlying mechanisms andspecialised morphological structures of biological organisms. Role ofstatistics of photons in photoreception is questioned. The review alsopinpoints new and developing directions and raises questions for the futureresearch.
