We propose discrete-time polarization mode dispersion (PMD) models that arecompatible with the emerging coherent receiver techniques, and statisticalsampling schemes for the model parameters. These models use multiple-inputmultiple-output (MIMO) finite impulse response (FIR) filters that are losslessand therefore lend themselves as perfect candidates for emulation of fiberchannels suffering from PMD without polarization dependent loss (PDL). Theconcatenated composition of these filters resembles the continuous time lumpedmodel of PMD channels and offers a flexible emulator and compensator structurein terms of computational complexity which constitutes the main bottleneck forreal-time DSP applications.
