The basic mechanics of evolution have been understood since Darwin. Butdebate continues over whether macroevolutionary phenomena are driven primary bythe fitness structure of genotype space or by ecological interaction. In thispaper we propose a simple, abstract model capturing some key features offitness-landscape and ecological models of evolution. Our model describesevolutionary dynamics in a high-dimensional, structured genotype space with asignificant role for interspecific interaction. We find some promisingqualitative similarity with the empirical facts about macroevolution, includingbroadly distributed extinction sizes and realistic exploration of the genotypespace. The abstraction of our model permits numerous interpretations andapplications beyond macroevolution, including molecular evolution andtechnological innovation.
