Photometric calibration is currently the dominant source of systematicuncertainty in exploiting type Ia supernovae to determine the nature of thedark energy. We review our ongoing program to address this calibrationchallenge by performing measurements of both the instrumental response functionand the optical transmission function of the atmosphere. A key aspect of thisapproach is to complement standard star observations by using NIST-calibratedphotodiodes as a metrology foundation for optical flux measurements. We presentour first attempt to assess photometric consistency between syntheticphotometry and observations, by comparing predictions based on aNIST-diode-based determination of the PanSTARRS-1 instrumental response andempirical atmospheric transmission measurements, with fluxes we obtained fromobserving spectrophotometric standards.
