Two simultaneous three wave mixing processes are analyzed, where an inputfrequency is converted to an output frequency via an intermediate stage. Byemploying simultaneous phase-matching and an adiabatic modulation of thenonlinear coupling strengths, the intermediate frequency is kept darkthroughout the interaction, while obtaining high conversion efficiency. Thisfeat is accomplished in a manner analogous to population transfer in atomicstimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP). Applications include conversionbetween remote frequencies, e.g. mid-IR to visible, and study of electroniccrystal properties in the UV absorption band.
