A general time-inconsistent optimal control problem is considered forstochastic differential equations with deterministic coefficients. Undersuitable conditions, a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman type equation is derived for theequilibrium value function of the problem. Well-posedness and some propertiesof such an equation is studied, and time-consistent equilibrium strategies areconstructed. As special cases, the linear-quadratic problem and a generalizedMerton's portfolio problem are investigated.
