We measured the magnetic field of the bright, evolved hot subdwarf HD 76431by means of high-resolution spectropolarimetry. In contrast to previousmeasurements we were not able to detect a significant magnetic field. Wediscuss the possibility that this field may be variable. Our search for apossible companion star to HD 76431 led to inconclusive results.
