We address the problem of optimizing the throughput of network coded trafficin mobile networks operating in challenging environments where connectivity isintermittent and locally available memory space is limited. Random linearnetwork coding (RLNC) is shown to be equivalent (across all possible initialconditions) to a random message selection strategy where nodes are able toexchange buffer occupancy information during contacts. This result creates thepremises for a tractable analysis of RLNC packet spread, which is in turn usedfor enhancing its throughput under broadcast. By exploiting the similaritybetween channel coding and RLNC in intermittently connected networks, we showthat quite surprisingly, network coding, when not used properly, is stillsignificantly underutilizing network resources. We propose an enhancedforwarding protocol that increases considerably the throughput for practicalcases, with negligible additional delay.
