The purpose of this study is to propose a technical alternative for the establishment of facilities that are safe from disasters caused by chemical, biological, and nuclear substances and other dangerous materials. In this study, the present situation of the underground parking lot of an apartment house is analyzed and a plan for securing this underground space to perform as a shelter is proposed. Because of this new use for the underground parking lot, explosion-proof doors are provided at the parking ramp, and at the main entrance. Additionally, an air purifier, a dry toilet, and a rain water supply facility are installed. The air purifier can purify an air volume of 3.5-4.0 m per person depending upon the area of the compartment to be purified.
