In this study, the method for determining the position of open-type debris flow check dam was investigated using numerical models. Numerical experiments were carried out on a moving bed to investigate changes in hydraulic parameters such as flow rate, sediment concentration, water slope, and erosion / deposition velocity coefficient in the bed. It was found that the occurrence of flow peak in debris flow is a characteristic phenomenon, resulting in active erosion due to a rise in debris flow rate. The variation of sediment concentration can be a key factor in distinguishing between active debris flow and traction. A field-based numerical simulation was performed to investigate the proper placement of the check dam. The results of this numerical experiment were applied to the debris flow occurring in the valley in Gangwon-do to assess the appropriate positioning of the check dam. It is considered the hydraulic factors such as flow rate and sediment concentration is an effective method to determine the location of open-type check dams.
