Since drought can’t be solved technically once it occurs, it is important to anticipate and prepare for the drought before it occurs. This study statistically investigates the relationship between dam reservoir storage, standard precipitation evapotranspiration index, and dam water release conditions using regression analysis. 208 annual data from 6 multi-purpose dams with over 30 years in South Korea is collected and analyzed. The analysis indicates that the standard precipitation evapotranspiration index with a long-term time scale has a predictive power on dam reservoir storage. The larger the amount of average monthly discharge in August and October, the more water will be stored in April of the following year. Floodgate discharge in September is also related to the dam water storage. Using these results, we can estimate the possibility of drought in the next year, and if the possibility is high, we can find out how to improve resilience against drought by controlling the dam discharge conditions.
