Thirteenth Century has a distinctive place in European Intellectual History with regard to intellectual renewal and revival. Particularly, the translation of Aristotle’s unknown works from their originals led to the formation of great intellectual activity and polemical literature. These developments also triggered theological debates. Application of Aristotelian scientific methodology to theology and attempts for harmonization between faith and reason encouraged a controversy on the nature of systematic theology. In these controversies, Robert Grosseteste (1175-1253), as a prominent scholar and bishop of the thirteenth-century England, adopted a traditionalist attitude to religious issues such as the nature of theology, divine illumination and eternity. In this article, we will display the dilemmas confronted by Grosseteste between innovative methodology in science and traditionalist approach of theology within the sense of thirteenth-century Intellectual History and underline distinctive aspects of his thought.
