Aerodynamic data of the wind induced swaying force and yawing moment of a ship passing near a pier of a large bridge spanning its course were obtained from tests conducted in a wind tunnel with a water tank. By using these data as the external disturbance factors in the equations of motion of a ship under way, ship trajectories were computed with respect to various courses in the vicinity of a pier. The results indicate that to pass safely ships must generally maintain a minumum course to pier face clearance of one ship length.
