Japan, 1969-1970, was reported in a previous publication (Tagaya and Moritsugu, 1973). In the following year, however, coxsackievirus A 16 (CA 16), the causative agent of the disease, seemed to have disappeared from the country; only one laboratory reported positive isolation of CA 16, but later it proved to have been due to misidentification as checked by the Department of Enteroviruses, National Institute of Health. In 1972 small outbreaks of HFMD were reported from several laboratories and in 1973 epidemics of the disease again appeared throughout the country. Because some differences were noticed both clinically and virologically between the previous epidemic and the present one, queries were sent to the collaborating laboratories reporting monthly enterovirus isolation to the WHO through the Department of Enteroviruses, National Institute of Health of Japan, as well as other laboratories and medical colleges, where laboratory diagnoses of viral diseases are made. Sixty laboratories in the 47 prefectures collaborated in this investigation. Almost all areas from Kyushu to Hokkaido reported outbreaks, but Okinawa, Saga, Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagawa, Nara, Niigata or Tochigi prefecture reported no epidemic. No reliable information was obtained from Oita, Saitama or Ibaragi prefecture. In 1972 small outbreaks were reported from Fukuoka (Kyushu region), Osaka and Shiga (Kinki region) prefectures, and a few sporadic cases from Okayama (Chugoku region), Mie (Kinki region), Shizuoka and Fukui
