Surface waters of the Midriff Islands region of the Gulf of California persistently have the lowest temperatures (SST) and the highest nutrient concentrations of all surface waters of the gulf. The purpose of this work was to characterize the annual and semiannual variations of satellite-derived SST, chlorophyll a (Chlsat), and phytoplankton production (PP) along transects in Ballenas Channel (transect A), between Angel de la Guarda and Tiburon islands (transect B), and San Pedro Martir Basin (SPMB) (transect C). This was done with monthly composites of SST, Chlsat, and PP for 2005 and 2006. Chlsat and PP have annual and semiannual components of variation at the three transects, but the temporal setup is different for each transect. In Ballenas Channel the two maxima occurred in March–June and October, while along transect B in March–May and in late autumn and early winter, and at SPMB in February–May and October–December. The explanation for the differences is in the physical dynamics of these areas. Strong turbulence and stratification caused low Chlsat and PP, and intermediate stratification caused high values for transects A and B. On the eastern side of transect C, upwelling caused the highest Chlsat and PP of our data set (up to 9.7 mg m–3 and 7.8 g C m–2 d–1). Photosynthesis in our study area is not limited by iron. Low summer Chlsat and PP values are caused by strong stratification inhibiting nutrient eddy diffusion from below the thermocline to the euphotic zone. Nevertheless, the summer Chlsat and PP values for the Midriff Islands region (often >1 mg m–3 and >1 g C m–2 d–1) are relatively high.   Las aguas superficiales de la region de las islas grandes del golfo de California tienen temperaturas (TSM) mas bajas y concentraciones mas altas de nutrientes que el resto del golfo. El proposito de este trabajo fue caracterizar las variaciones de TSM, clorofila a (Chlsat) y produccion fitoplanctonica (PP) derivadas de imagenes de satelite en trayectos realizados en el canal de Ballenas (trayecto A), entre las islas Angel de la Guarda y Tiburon (trayecto B), y en la cuenca de San Pedro Martir (trayecto C). Se utilizaron composiciones mensuales de SST, Chlsat y PP de 2005 y 2006. Chlsat y PP presentaron componentes de variacion anual y semianual en los tres trayectos, pero hay diferencias cuando se presentaron los maximos en cada trayecto. En el trayecto A los maximos se observaron de marzo a junio y en octubre, en el B de marzo a mayo y a finales de otono y principios de invierno, y en el C de febrero a mayo y de octubre a diciembre. Las diferencias fueron causadas por la dinamica fisica de estas areas. En A y B la turbulencia y estratificacion fuertes causaron Chlsat y PP bajas, y la estratificacion intermedia causo valores altos. Las surgencias en el lado oriental de C causaron las mas altas Chlsat y PP de nuestro conjunto de datos (hasta 9.7 mg m–3 y 7.8 g C m–2 d–1). La fotosintesis no es limitada por hierro en nuestra area de estudio. Los valores bajos de verano de Chlsat y PP fueron causados por la estratificacion fuerte que inhibe el transporte turbulento de nutrientes desde abajo de la termoclina a la zona eufotica. Sin embargo, los valores de verano de Chlsat y PP de la region de las islas grandes (a menudo >1 mg m–3 y >1 g C m–2 d–1) son relativamente altos.
