With the goal of generate proper ecological data in order to future cetacean management and conservation plans, the distribution, home range (HR) and residence of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) were studied at the Central-North Mexican Gulf of Mexico (21°35’ N, 97°19’ W and 20°08’ N, 96°40’ W). Between July 2005 and June 2008, 59 boat surveys were carried out and a total of 313 hours of effort applied at sea. 471 individuals were observed in 88 different groups. Photographs of naturally marked animals resulted in 275 different individuals photo-identified. Their distribution was homogeneous through the study site at a mean distance from coast of 2.5 km (SD=2.9; n=471) and a depth less than 20 m. From all identified dolphins, 202 (73%) had a low sighting rate (LSR) and were considered transients, whereas 34 individuals (12%) with medium and high sighting rates (MSR and HSR) were considered as resident animals. Home range estimates calculated with the Minimum Convex Polygon (MCP) method ranged from 1,553 km2 in Dry season to 3,746 km2 in Rainy season ( = 2,771 ±1,116 km2). Using the Adaptive Kernel method (ADK), a decrease in core areas was observed during Rainy season, due to dolphins remained close to the rivers’ plume. This population of dolphins showed characteristics from both open and close habitats, and alike other reports, the main component in the size of the home range is the presence of rivers, more than the geomorphology of the coast.
