The seasonal variability of sea surface temperature (SST) in the Magdalena-Almejas Bay lagoon system (Mexico) and adjacent oceanic region was characterized in terms of the averaged monthly SST distributions obtained from AVHRR satellite images during the period 1996–2001. Additionally, oceanographic data obtained during five sampling campaigns were analyzed. A regional subdivision of the study area was made in relation to the main physical processes affecting the thermohaline structure, such as upwelling, tidal transport, and surface heat fluxes. Annual cycles of monthly mean SST for these subregions showed that during the period from April to September the inner lagoon water was warmer than the adjacent oceanic water, with a maximum difference of 1.3oC in June. During the period from October to February, the SST inside the lagoon system was lower than in the adjacent ocean (by up to –1.5oC in December). These results are discussed in terms of upwelling activity in the adjacent oceanic region and winter cooling effects on the surface, particularly in Almejas Bay. Most of the system (about 70% of its surface) is characterized by vertical homogeneity. Thermohaline stratification modulated by coastal upwelling activity in the adjacent oceanic region is observed in the deepest part of the lagoon system (greater than 15 m), especially during the spring and summer. The oceanic conditions frequently observed in this subregion of Magdalena Bay are hypothetically explained by the combined action of coastal upwelling and horizontal tidal transport. These local effects were more evident during the flood, when a strong tidal flow (up to 1.1 m s–1) produced intense vertical mixing of near-bottom cold water with upper layer water leading to reduced SST values.  La variabilidad estacional de la temperatura superficial del mar (TSM) en el sistema lagunar Bahia Magdalena-Bahia Almejas (Mexico) y en la region oceanico adyacente se caracterizo en terminos de los promedios mensuales de las distribuciones de TSM obtenidas a partir de las imagenes satelitales de AVHRR durante el periodo 1996–2001. Adicionalmente, se analizaron los datos oceanograficos obtenidos durante cinco campanas de muestreo. Se realizo una subdivision regional del area de estudio con relacion a los procesos fisicos importantes que afectan la estructura termohalina local, tales como las surgencias, el transporte de marea y los flujos superficiales de calor. Los ciclos anuales del promedio mensual de TSM para estas subregiones mostraron que durante el periodo de abril a septiembre el interior del sistema lagunar fue mas calido que la region oceanica adyacente. La maxima diferencia de 1.3oC se observo en junio. Durante el periodo de octubre a febrero el interior del sistema lagunar fue mas frio (hasta de –1.5oC en diciembre). Estos resultados se explican en terminos de la actividad de surgencias en la region oceanica adyacente y del enfriamiento invernal de la superficie en el interior del sistema lagunar, principalmente en Bahia Almejas. La mayor parte del sistema (cerca del 70% de su superficie) se caracteriza por una distribucion vertical practicamente homogenea. La estratificacion termohalina modulada por la actividad de surgencia en la region oceanica adyacente se observo en la region mas profunda del sistema lagunar (mayor a 15 m), especialmente durante el periodo de primavera-verano. Las condiciones oceanicas frecuentemente observadas en esta subregion de Bahia Magdalena se explican hipoteticamente por el efecto combinado de la surgencia costera y el transporte horizontal de marea. Estos efectos locales fueron mas evidentes durante las fases del flujo de marea, cuando intensas corrientes (hasta de 1.1 m s–1) produjeron una intensa mezcla vertical de aguas frias, resultando en una disminucion apreciable de la TSM.
