The metal content measured in surface sediment and suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples collected from the Ulla River estuary (NW Spain) showed evidence of contamination by Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn, but not by Cd, Fe, and Pb. The metals are trapped mainly in the sediment of two estuary zones, just before they reach the Arosa Ria. The first zone is located at the estuary head, where estuarine mixing occurs and the SPM from the Ulla River contributes Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn, while the Sar River discharges urban waste and Cr. The second zone is located at the estuary mouth (ria head), where a weak sediment dynamics and the presence of mussel rafts results in contamination by Cu and Cr, metals that are abundant in the SPM that manages to traverse a shallow sand bar found before the estuary mouth.  Se cuantificaron los contenidos de metales en el sedimento superficial y la materia particulada en suspension (SPM) en el estuario del Rio Ulla. Los resultados no indican contaminacion por Cd, Fe y Pb, pero si por Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni y Zn. Estos metales son retenidos principalmente en los sedimentos de dos zonas del estuario antes de alcanzar la ria de Arosa. La primera trampa de metales se encuentra en la cabecera del estuario, donde ocurre la mezcla estuarica. En ella la SPM transportada por el Rio Ulla contribuye con Cu, Mn, Ni y Zn, mientras que el Rio Sar aporta aguas residuales y Cr. La segunda trampa de metales se encuentra en la desembocadura del estuario (cabecera de la ria), donde los sedimentos presentan una dinamica baja y se encuentran fondeadas bateas de mejillon. Esa zona se halla contaminada por Cu y Cr, metales abundantes en la SPM que logra atravesar una barra arenosa somera ubicada antes de la boca del estuario.
