Field surveys of three coexisting Lekanesphaera species from a temperate estuary were used to test the hypothesis that their abundance and distribution within this ecosystem were limited mainly by environmental conditions (water temperature, salinity, and turbidity). Monthly samples were collected during each new moon (May 1998 to October 2002) in the last 32 km of the Guadalquivir Estuary (SW Spain). Lekanesphaera hoestlandti was more abundant in the outer estuary from late summer to early autumn, but only when estuarine mean salinity was higher than 15; L. rugicauda showed a clear seasonal pattern, with maximum densities coinciding with the period of increasing temperatures (spring and early summer); and the density of L. hookeri was very low, except in situations of heavy rainfall and/or freshwater inflow, suggesting than the main river course is not its usual habitat. Spatial, salinity-related, and turbidity-related distributions of the three populations indicated that L. hoestlandti is clearly segregated from the other two species, the former inhabiting the more saline and less turbid mass of water of the outer estuary. Furthermore, the high positive effect of salinity on the density of L. hoestlandti (salinity explained 59.4% of the temporal density variance) and its much more restricted spatial and salinity-related distributions indicated that salinity could be primarily determining its population. In contrast, the field distribution of L. rugicauda was biased towards lower salinity waters at least when L. hoestlandti occurred in high densities. According to the field distributions, we hypothesize that the estuarine distribution of the less euryhaline species, such as L. hoestlandti, is controlled mainly by salinity, whereas the distribution of the more euryhaline species, such as L. rugicauda, could be motivated more by competition (food/habitat) avoidance. As previously observed for mysid species, the composition and distribution of Sphaeromatidae species in the Guadalquivir Estuary seem to fit the African rather than the European estuarine pattern.  Se realizaron estudios de campo de tres especies de Lekanesphaera coexistentes en un estuario templado para probar la hipotesis de que su abundancia y distribucion en este ecosistema estan limitadas principalmente por las condiciones ambientales (temperatura del agua, salinidad y turbidez). Las muestras fueron tomadas mensualmente en cada luna nueva (mayo de 1998 a octubre de 2002) en los ultimos 32 km del Estuario del Guadalquivir (SO de Espana). Lekanesphaera hoestlandti resulto ser mas abundante en la parte mas externa del estuario desde el verano tardio al otono temprano, pero solo cuando la salinidad media en el estuario fue superior a 15; L. rugicauda mostro un claro patron estacional, con densidades maximas coincidentes con el periodo de incremento de las temperaturas (primavera y verano temprano); mientras que la densidad de L. hookeri fue muy baja, excepto en situaciones de fuertes precipitaciones y/o entrada de agua, lo que indica que el cauce principal del rio no es su habitat habitual. Las distribuciones espacial y con respecto a la salinidad y la turbidez de las tres poblaciones indicaron que L. hoestlandti esta claramente separada de las otras dos especies, habitando la primera en las masas de agua mas salinas y menos turbias de la parte mas externa del estuario. Ademas, el elevado efecto positivo de la salinidad sobre la densidad de L. hoestlandti (la salinidad explico el 59.4% de la varianza temporal de su densidad) y sus mucho mas restringidas distribuciones espacial y con respecto a la salinidad, indicaron que la salinidad podria ser un factor muy decisivo en la determinacion de su poblacion. Por el contrario, la distribucion de campo de L. rugicauda estuvo desplazada hacia aguas con salinidades mas bajas, al menos cuando L. hoestlandti aparecio en densidades altas. De acuerdo con las distribuciones de campo, se plantea la hipotesis de que la distribucion en el estuario de las especies menos eurihalinas, como L. hoestlandti, esta siendo principalmente controlada por la salinidad, mientras que la distribucion de las especies mas eurihalinas, como L. rugicauda, podria deberse mas bien a una forma de evitar la competencia (comida/habitat). Como previamente se observo para las especies de misidaceos, la composicion y distribucion de las especies de la familia Sphaeromatidae en el estuario del Guadalquivir parece ajustarse mejor al patron estuarino africano que al europeo.
