Se documenta la evolucion y el area de influencia de los vientos Santa Ana sobre el Oceano Pacifico frente a las costas de California y de la Peninsula de Baja California a partir de observaciones del satelite QuikScat. El patron de vientos que tipicamente se dirige hacia el sureste en esta region, fue modificado por los vientos Santa Ana al cambiar su direccion hacia el sur, suroeste y oeste entre el 9 y 12 de febrero de 2002. Los cambios fueron inicialmente notables al sur de California, pero los mayores indices de variacion fueron entre los 26oN y 28oN frente a la peninsula, con maximos dentro del Golfo de California, sobre todo en la parte norte. Su maxima extension con direccion al oeste desde la costa fue el 11 de febrero, cuando alcanzo los 32oN y 125oW o ~700 km; sin embargo, se extendieron hacia el suroeste aproximadamente hasta los 25oN y 124oW o ~1000 km. Se observo que la orografia de la Peninsula de Baja California tiene un papel importante en el control del paso de los vientos del Golfo de California hacia el Pacifico, causando en varias localidades lenguetas de arena y polvo sobre el oceano.   The evolution and extension of Santa Ana winds over the Pacific Ocean, off the coasts of California and the Baja California Peninsula, is documented from QuikScat satellite observations. The typical wind pattern in this region is towards the southeast, but between 9 and 12 February 2002 it was modified by Santa Ana winds, changing in direction towards the south, southwest and west. The changes were notable at first in southern California, but the largest indices of variation occurred between 26oN and 28oN off the Baja California Peninsula, with maxima in the Gulf of California, mainly in the northern part. The maximum extension of the winds to the west of the coast was on 11 February, reaching 32oN and 125oW, or ~700 km; however, towards the southwest the winds extended to 25oN and 124oW, or ~1000 km. The topography of the peninsula plays an important role in controlling the winds passing from the Gulf of California to the Pacific, causing plumes of sand and dust in several locations over the ocean.
