The construction of the church of St. Nicholas located in Piraeus dates back to 1839. Over the years the building has undergone several interventions until recent earthquakes caused serious damages to the structure. The damages are mainly attributed to the absence of particular provisions to sustain seismic loads. A detailed in-situ and laboratory testing of the masonry structure was carried out in order to search its geometry, the constructions details and the mechanical characteristics of the materials. Also, finite element analyses were performed in order to assess the current condition of the structure and its dynamic behavior. The capacity of the church was determined through linear global analysis and non-linear analysis with macroelements. Based on the results, strengthening interventions were proposed, using a combination of masonry consolidation techniques, carbon fiber reinforced materials (CFRP) and steel tie rods. The effectiveness of the strengthening is assessed through comparison of the analysis results before and after interventions.
