What follows is a set of explanatory notes providing more more information about the background to the theory presented in the conference video. There is a section below on branching forms of biological consciousness, criticising theories of consciousness that build on simplistic fashionable definitions or slogans (e.g. "what it is like, or feels like to ...", ignoring the great variety of types and functions of consciousness in different products of biological evolution and at different stages of development within individual conscious organisms.
