The main goal of this paper is to illustrate the opportunities the r.sun model provides for assessing the solar potential of a selected area under the real sky conditions. The issue of using the r.sun model for generating the spatial distribution of the total solar radiation was discussed in previous works, e.g. those of Hofi erk, Suri and Kryza [7, 8, 12, 15, 17, 16]. However, these works do not include the clouds’ impact on the total amounts of solar radiation. In general, the spatial distribution of solar radiation is determined by numerous elements, such as: – terrain, – atmosphere, – pollutants, – water and aerosol in the atmosphere, – clouds and shadowing eff ects of the surrounding buildings.
