It is important for turbocharged GDI(T-GDI) engines to reduce oil mist in the blow-by gas to prevent LSPI and turbocharged oil coking. Therefore, this study has developed a high efficiency cylinder, head-integrated oil mist separator by using a compact fleece, impactor-type oil mist separator system to ensure adequate oil mist separation performance. To achieve this, engine dynamometer testing with an oil particle efficiency measurement equipment and a 3D, two-phase flow simulation have been performed in various configurations and different types of oil mist separators. It was found that oil aerosol particle size distributions varied, depending on separator type and operating conditions. Submicron-sized particles(less than 0.5 μm) were observed. Whereas a conventional baffle labyrinth packing oil separator cannot effectively catch small oil mist, an impactor-type oil mist separator with a plastic fleece can efficiently catch over 60 % of oil mist. However, the separator efficiencies of droplet sizes that were less than 3 μm abruptly deteriorated. As a result of this study, the key performance parameter of an oil mist separator for T-GDI engines is a plastic fleece, which must be optimized to ensure the adequate separator performance of droplets that were less than 3 μm.
