The effect of oxidation resistance on the mechanical properties of two gas turbine seal ring alloys at 650°C and 760°C was investigated. Alloy 909, an Fe-Ni-Co alloy which has much higher tensile strength than 242 alloy, was found to have poor oxidation resistance which is reflected in reduced stress rupture strength and low cycle fatigue resistance. The deterioration in mechanical properties was caused by cracking of the oxide scale and subscale under tensile stress. The 242 alloy, a NiMo-Cr alloy, exhibited good oxidation resistance and good long term mechanical properties.
