To address the need for an improved disk material, General Electric Aircraft Engines initiated an alloy development program which resulted in the production introduction of a powder metallurgy nickel-base disk alloy, Rene%gDT, with a significantly improved balance of creep, damage tolerance and tensile properties. The work done to evaluate experimental alloy compositions in laboratory screening trials and the down-selection to a preferred alloy through scale-up and full scale processing trials is described. In addition, the technology developed to overcome major challenges in grain size control, heat treatability, and achieving the proper balance between property levels and producibility is discussed.
