The paper examines the role of the manager in the theatre system in Serbia. The starting point is the assumption that the managerial strategy arises from the romanticised vision of a theatrical genius as well as the contemporary managerial conception of management which includes the strictness of a defined theatrical system. Further on, the paper examines the role of the manager, who always sits somewhere between the internal and external pressures, from the perspective of the 20th century actor; the actor being the most prominent representative of the internal antagonist to the managerial activities and the most efficient corrector of their work.
